With over 200 million population, Indonesia remains the largest Muslim country in the world making it among the biggest potential market for Halal products and services. The population is estimated to grow to 238 million by 2030 indicating that there is ample room to penetrate this market. Indonesia’s total Halal imports are currently estimated at USD 163 Billion.

In November 2019, Indonesia will officially implement Indonesia’s Mandatory Halal Law –  Number 33/ 2014.

According to this law, Halal certification is mandatory in Indonesia for all food, beverage, drugs, cosmetics, chemicals (used for human consumption), organic and genetically modified products sold in Indonesia as well as for the machinery and equipment involved in processing these products.

This legal framework is of strong relevance to  manufacturers of consumable goods, medicines, cosmetics, chemical products, genetically engineered products, who are exporting to Indonesia.

Since the full operation of the law is next year, companies will only have a brief period to comply to this law before all new Halal Law under the Halal Product Assurance Organising Agency or BPJPH is fully implemented.
